Lucinda lives with her husband in a farming village near Daru in Eastern Sierra Leone. Although she is only twenty years old, she has already had five pregnancies. Three babies were stillborn, but her last two, now ages four and three, are alive and well. While pregnant with her last child three years ago, Lucinda was in labor for a full day and developed a fistula as a result of the painful process. Her injury left her very weak and injured. She became anemic, lost her ability to walk and grew very weak. Veronica, West Africa Fistula Foundation’s outreach midwife, found Lucinda and took her to a hospital, where she received three units of blood. Thanks to our donors and supporters, Lucinda received her surgery and can return home to her children and husband!
