Meet Mamie
Mamie is seventeen and lives with her farming family on Bonthe Island, a rural island off the coast of Sierra Leone. In March 2013, at just sixteen, she delivered her first baby – stillborn – after a long, painful labor. She developed obstetric fistula as a result of the labor process, and after a year of living with the injury, a missionary brought her from the island by boat and took her across 8 hours of rough roads to the West Africa Fistula Foundation.
