"Southlake teens with a purpose raise money for charity" by Larre Green
Readers, last May I told you about two amazing young girls who, after watching a documentary entitled “Walk to Beautiful” about women who suffer from childbirth injuries in Ethiopia, decided to do something about it.The film tells the story of five women who are shunned by their family and community because they suffer from problems brought on by a medical condition called obstetric fistula, which is caused by prolonged labor and inadequate healthcare. The documentary inspired Maria and Julia Myers of Southlake to start their own charity, Pretty Purposeful, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. From there, they created their own one-day event — Camp Pretty Purposeful. All of the profits go to help pay for surgeries for girls and women in Africa.Fast-forward to Jan. 25, when their selfless act came to fruition. The two girls donated $25,000 to the West Africa Fistula Foundation at a ceremony at the Hilton Dallas/Southlake Town Square.West Africa Fistula Foundation founder and board member Dr. Darius Maggi was on hand to accept the check. But what makes this story so incredible is that these two girls are only 14 and 16 years old.I believe that the term “dynamic duo” truly applies in this case! Outstanding job girls. You both have made the world a better place.
